Tamil Nadu Police has registered a case against four people, including journalists and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, for spreading “fake” news about the attack on migrant laborers from Bihar. Police said a case has been registered in the Supreme Court against BJP spokesperson and lawyer Prashant Umrao, editor of a national media institute and journalist from Patna.

Bihar CM took cognizance of the matter

Let us tell you that after the ‘fake’ news on social media about the attack on North Indian workers, there was panic among the migrant workers working in Tamil Nadu in the entire state. Panic had spread after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar raised concerns on Thursday and brought attention to purported videos of the “attacks”. The Bihar CM had directed the Chief Secretary and DGP of the state to talk to Tamil Nadu government officials and ensure the safety of laborers from their state.

Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu told the truth
The impact of these reports was that industries in Tamil Nadu, which depend on migrant workers, were badly hit, with workers stopping work due to panic. Taking cognizance of this, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Silendra Babu issued a statement, saying that the video doing the rounds on social media was “false” and “mischievous”. He said, “Somebody in Bihar posted false and mischievous videos saying that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu. Two videos were posted. Both are fake as these incidents happened in Tiruppur and Coimbatore on an earlier date. One was a clash between two groups of migrant workers from Bihar, while the other was between two local residents in Coimbatore.” DGP Silendra Babu also said that people spreading these rumors will not be spared.

Tamil Nadu police registered a case
Now, in response to the incident, the Tamil Nadu Police has registered a case against four people in different districts of the southern state. According to the DGP of Tamil Nadu, a case has been registered against the editor of a news organization under sections 153 (A), 505 (I) (B) and several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Tirupur North Police Station. A case has been registered against BJP spokesperson, Prashant Umrao at Tuticorin Central Police Station. “Besides, Mohammad Tanveer, owner of Twitter handle ‘Tanveer Post’ and another have also been booked,” the DGP said in a statement. The DGP has ordered formation of a special team to arrest the absconding accused.
